THE REASONS FOR STUDENT AWARDS AND HOW TO GET THEM

When people learn something new, they all want to be recognised, and badges can help them do that. Students (and adults!) seek recognition for their accomplishments, whether it's mastering a new skill, achieving a goal, or performing a nice deed.

The word "badge" may conjure up thoughts of a Girl Scout sash with material school badges demonstrating skill at first glance. While the premise is identical, today's badges have considerably more implications than that simple image. Badges are credentials that indicate an individual's abilities, interests, and accomplishments as a result of certain initiatives, programmes, courses, or other activities.

Use of Student Badges in the Classroom for a Variety of Reasons

Badges are a great way to encourage pupils to do well in school and in life. Take a look at some of the reasons why you should use badges to promote student learning.

1. Acknowledge Your Achievements

Achievements are represented through badges. They can be given to kids for finishing a challenging project, performing a compassionate act, or changing their behaviour.

2. Encourage collaboration

Badges enable students to collaborate, cooperate, and communicate more effectively. Students will compete with one another to obtain various badges in the classroom, motivating and encouraging one another.

3. Verify your progress

Badges can signify that students have met specified learning objectives and are progressing in their studies. This will result in noticeable classroom improvements.

4. Showcase your abilities

Badges reveal skills that a number or letter grade may not reveal. Empathy, entrepreneurship, leadership, cooperation, or deep thought are some examples. They provide a public forum for students to communicate what they have learnt.

5. Outperform Traditional Evaluations

Badges can be used as a supplement to traditional assessments to help identify a student's individual strengths and weaknesses. To identify opportunities for development, look beyond written assessments, quizzes, and grades.

6. Encourage students to enjoy learning.

Because students are encouraged to compete against one another, badges can offer a fun element to the classroom. Demonstrate to students that learning can be enjoyable.

Badge Types to Use in the Classroom

In the classroom, the sort of badge you use is determined by what works best for you and your pupils.

You can generate a digital replica of the badge and upload it to a student portfolio or class blog page using digital badges. The Badges for Professional Learning blog post has several tools for creating digital badges.

With traditional badges, you can download or develop a badge that you then print and distribute in large quantities. You may even put them up on the school bulletin board for a bit before handing them out to your students.

With button badges, you use a button machine to turn student badges into buttons. The awarded button might then be pinned to the student's blazer or backpack.

Have you ever tried using school badges  in your classroom? If that's the case, what has worked for you? Please let us know by leaving a comment!
